A Fringe Sect Bought Freeway Space and Found an Unarmed Church

A black-and-white sign towers over a California freeway in stark, official-looking type. Four words. Jesus is not God. Thousands of commuters pass it every day, and a great many of them, if they are honest, could not tell you in thirty seconds why it is wrong. That is the actual story here — not the billboard, which is merely rented, but the silence it exposed.

The argument on that vinyl is seventeen centuries old. In the early fourth century a presbyter in Alexandria named Arius taught that the Son was God’s first and greatest creation, exalted above all things but not eternal, not equal, not God. The teaching spread through the Mediterranean world with remarkable speed, split bishops from bishops, and forced the church into the most consequential doctrinal fight in its history. The church answered it at Nicaea in 325. The answer stuck for seventeen hundred years. Now it has been repackaged, purchased, and hung above the 405.

Who paid for the sign?

The sponsor is an outfit called World’s Last Chance, founded in 2004 and operating largely through a website and a YouTube channel. Christian Post and Faithwire have both traced the campaign to the group, which describes its billboards as four themes meant to shatter long-held misconceptions. Signs have gone up in Southern California, Georgia, and other states. A companion message declares that Jesus did not pre-exist in Heaven.

The group is not a denomination. It is not a church. It is an internet ministry with enough money to buy visual real estate, and its catalog of positions is worth reciting in full, because the billboard is designed to be encountered alone and the rest is designed to be discovered later.

World’s Last Chance rejects the Trinity. It teaches a lunisolar calendar for determining the Sabbath. It refuses the English name Jesus in favor of Yahushua and calls the Father Yahuwah. It adds law-keeping as a requirement for righteousness. And, per CBN, it teaches that the earth is flat.

An organization that cannot correctly identify the shape of the planet has purchased the authority to instruct Californians on the nature of the Godhead. The sign works precisely because it does not mention the calendar or the flat earth. It offers no argument at all. It is a provocation dressed as a conclusion, and it is aimed at people who have never been given the tools to answer it.

The answer the church already wrote down

John opens his Gospel by declaring that the Word was with God and the Word was God, and then closes the loop fourteen verses later by saying that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Christ tells the Pharisees that before Abraham was, I am — a construction so unmistakable that his listeners immediately reached for stones. Thomas, confronted with the wounds, says my Lord and my God, and receives no correction. Paul writes to the Colossians that in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

None of this is obscure. None of it requires Greek, a seminary degree, or a commentary. It requires that someone, at some point, taught it to you and expected you to remember. That is the part American churches quietly stopped doing somewhere between the seeker-sensitive revolution and the sermon series on financial peace. We traded catechesis for relevance and then acted surprised when a fringe sect with a printing budget could rattle the pews.

The paint roller and the better answer

In late January a video went viral showing an unidentified man standing on a billboard catwalk with the Los Angeles skyline behind him, methodically painting out the word not. The internet loved it. Someone coined the word evandalism. Living Waters founder Ray Comfort weighed in with a warning about the group, noting that “whoever denies the Son does not have the Father.”

The instinct was right. The method was not. That billboard was legally purchased from a company that owns the structure, and painting it out is vandalism whatever the motive. Conservatives spent the better part of a decade watching statues toppled and storefronts smashed by people who were certain their cause justified the damage. We do not get to keep the principle only when the paint is running our direction. A faith that requires a ladder and a paint can to make its case has already conceded the argument it claims to be winning.

The better response was already happening, and almost nobody covered it. ChurchLeaders collected reader accounts of congregations and businesses answering the signs the way free people are supposed to answer speech they find false — by buying their own.

One reader described a California church that raised the money for a counter-billboard directly across from the original, pointing to a website with the full gospel. Another said a local electrical company in Lynchburg, Virginia put up its own sign reading that Jesus is God, complete with three chapter-and-verse citations. The reader added the detail that stings. None of the large churches paid for it. A private utility contractor did.

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Contend. Not deface. The word carries the sense of an argument pressed with everything you have, in public, against people who will push back. It assumes you know the material. It assumes you can open the book and show a stranger on a freeway offramp why the sign above his head is lying to him. Arius lost that argument in 325 because men who had memorized the text refused to yield an inch of it.

The billboards will come down when the contracts expire. The question worth sitting with is what happens the next time a fringe outfit with a few thousand dollars decides to test whether the American church still remembers what it believes — and whether, next time, anyone will have to climb a ladder at all.
