The Human Eye Was Never Wired Backward

Richard Dawkins has spent decades telling the world that God would never have built an eye this way. The photocells point the wrong direction. The wiring sits in front of the light. There is a blind spot punched through the retina. Any tidy-minded engineer, he said, would laugh and send the whole thing back.

Then the engineers kept looking. And the laugh landed on him.

Dr Jonathan Corrado walks through the anatomy again in a Creation Ministries piece first printed in 2023 and updated this month. The human eye is not a lucky camera. It is roughly forty interlocking subsystems — iris, pupil, cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, and the rest — doing work no smartphone sensor can match. It reads contrast and faint detail at the same time. It discerns about ten million colors. Photoreceptors fire electric pulses into the optic nerve, and the visual cortex, with help from processing already happening in the retina itself, handles up to 1.5 million pulse messages per millisecond.

He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

Ninety Million Rods and a Forest That Turns Out to Be Fiber Optic

The retina is the film. About ninety million rod cells handle low light in black and white. Six to seven million cone cells, packed near the macula, handle color in bright light. Three cone types divide the visible spectrum: long-wavelength for red, medium for green, short for blue.

That is the part Dawkins never bothered to finish. In The Blind Watchmaker he complained that light has to pass through “a forest of connecting wires, presumably suffering at least some attenuation and distortion.” Evolutionists still call the vertebrate retina inverted and treat the squid’s “verted” layout as the sensible alternative. No wiring in front of the sensors. No blind spot. Therefore, they say, no Designer.

Light, instead of being granted an unrestricted passage to the photocells, has to pass through a forest of connecting wires, presumably suffering at least some attenuation and distortion.

The forest includes living optical fibers. Müller glial cells span the thickness of the retina. Funnel-shaped endfeet collect light at the inner surface and guide it to the photoreceptors on the far side with low scatter and low loss. One Müller cell serves each cone. Several rods can share one. Researchers at Leipzig and later at the Technion in Haifa showed the array behaves like a fiber-optic plate. It sharpens the image. It helps sort wavelengths so red and green light reach the cones that need them. Night vision barely pays a tax.

The “wires” Dawkins mocked are not a traffic jam. Horizontal cells form a feedback loop that boosts contrast and sharpens edges without flattening the shadows. The blind spot exists on paper. Two eyes and a brain that fills the gap mean you do not live inside it.

Flip the Wiring and You Go Blind

The inverted layout is not a leftover accident. Photoreceptors sit against the retinal pigment epithelium so worn-out discs can be cleared and visual pigment can be resupplied. That tissue is opaque. So is the blood-rich layer that feeds cells with a ferocious metabolic burn and pulls off excess heat. Put those layers in front of the sensors — the arrangement Dawkins treats as obviously superior — and you are asking the eye to look through two black curtains.

Ophthalmologist Peter Gurney laid that out years before the Müller-cell papers made the headlines. Invert the retina the “correct” way and the light never arrives. Keep it as built and the receptors get fuel, cooling, and a fiber-optic feed. That is not a compromise. That is a specification.

Hawks and eagles use the same alleged blunder. Their acuity is about eight times ours. They spot prey from heights that would leave a human squinting. Nobody calls a hawk poorly designed. The squid, poster child for the “right” wiring, simply does not see as well. If the inverted retina were a defect, the animals that hunt by sight would have abandoned it. They did not.

The Argument From Insult

Bad-design rhetoric is not an observation. It is a sermon. The preacher assumes he already knows what a competent Engineer would have drawn on the first pass, then treats every unexpected layer as proof there was no Engineer. When the unexpected layer turns out to be a light guide tuned to the colors we actually use, the sermon does not get rewritten. It just gets louder.

Corrado’s point is simpler than the footnote war. Optimization means making a system as effective as possible for the world it inhabits. The human eye is maximized for life under this sun, in this atmosphere, with this brain. It would fail in another environment, which is exactly what you expect from a purpose-built instrument and not from a lucky kludge assembled by mutation and time.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.

Forty subsystems. Fiber optics grown in living tissue. A pigment layer that would black out the alternative design. A hawk that uses the same “mistake” to stoop on a rabbit. Dawkins asked for an engineer. He got one. He just refused to look through the eye God already gave him.
